Dorothy Thompson, a quem o seu biógrafo Peter Kurth epitetou de American Cassandra, foi uma jornalista e escritora Norte-americana da 1ª metade do século XX. Nasceu em Nova Iorque em 1893, filha de um Pastor Metodista. Entrevistou Hitler em 1931 e escreveu I Saw Hitler em 1932; com a subida ao poder de Hitler, foi a(o) primeira(o) jornalista estrangeira(o) a ser expulsa(o) da Alemanha – onde era correspondente do New York Post – em 1934. Faleceu em Lisboa em 1961.
Dorothy considerou o Nazismo como a «apoteose da mediocridade colectiva em todos os seus aspectos» - the apotheosis of collective mediocrity in all its forms – e alertou para o perigo das novas ditaduras mascaradas de democracia:
Have we forgotten what democratic government is? It is government by debate, by deliberation, by representatives elected to find measures to promote the public good by listening and consulting not only with the groups affected, but with those whose experience suggests that they may have valid judgment. Failing this, the task of framing legislation is delegated … to one or another corporate body or pressure group … As in the Fascist states.
Podem encontrar-se muitas citações e excertos de escritos e intervenções de Dorothy verdadeiramente impressionantes, mas aquele que apesar de tudo achei mais notável é este, de 1937:
I know now that there are things for which I am prepared to die. I am willing to die for political freedom; for the right to give my loyalty to ideals above a nation and above a class; for the right to teach my child what I think to be the truth; for the right to explore such knowledge as my brains can penetrate; for the right to love where my mind and heart admire, without reference to some dictator’s code to tell me what the national canons on the matter are; for the right to work with others of like mind; for a society that seems to me becoming to the dignity of the human race.
